Ontario Wait Times

Recent Changes

As of October 2008, the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care has expanded the wait time data found on this website. The following are the recent improvements as part of the ongoing development to meet the user’s needs  :

  • The reporting of wait time data has expanded to include surgeries under the following categories; General Surgery, Orthopaedic Surgery (outside of joint replacement surgery) and Ophthalmic Surgery (outside of cataract surgery).
  • Ontario has set wait time targets for general, orthopaedic and ophthalmic surgeries.

Data tables on the patient and health care professional sections are now reported differently to provide more relevant information to better meet the decision making needs of the specific users  :

  • Health care professional section – Now refreshed quarterly (every three months) and reports on the most recent quarter* (I.e. December refresh would report second quarter data - July/August/September). Users also have the ability to view trend graphs quarterly and monthly, displaying the most recent quarter and the most recent month.
  • Health care professional section – Wait times have been further broken down into priority categories. Priority is the outcome of an assessment performed by clinicians on each non-emergency patient to determine their urgency of care rating using priority assessment tools recommended by clinical expert panels. Priority reporting is the length of time patients waited for treatment by patient priority level for each service area.

Local Health Integration Network (LHIN) Variation Graphs  :

  • Health Care professional section - LHIN Variation Graphs have been included to provide a comparison in the variation between LHIN wait times along with provincial targets.
