Improving Efficiency Through Process Redesign :
Roaming Scopes for Flexible Endoscopy

For the past two years, Grey Bruce Health Services has been working on a plan to provide flexible scope endoscopy service at significantly higher volumes across its five hospitals. Grey Bruce’s goal was to increase scope procedures to 6200 over five years, with the same surgical capability.
Their solution was an innovative “roaming scope” program that allows the scopes to move fluidly between four rural hospitals — thereby ensuring maximum usage of the technology and better access to care for local residents.
Today, ten scopes roam between hospitals and the program is an important example of how the hospital is achieving on its goal to bring care closer to home for the communities it serves.
