On December 26, 2004 several countries in South East Asia were hit by a massive tsunami triggered by an earthquake under the Indian Ocean off the coast of Indonesia.
The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care (MOHLTC) has undertaken a series of initiatives, together with other ministries, to assist the Government of Ontario in responding to this tragedy. The MOHLTC has donated supplies and equipment relevant to relief efforts as part of a UNICEF aid flight, is developing a roster of health professionals who have volunteered their expertise should it be requested, and is providing information to Ontario healthcare providers and travellers to and from tsunami-affected areas.
Tsunami Relief Info Line
The Government of Ontario has established an info line for all public and private sector Ontarians wishing to volunteer their specialized technical or professional skills to help in the tsunami relief effort. Those interested are encouraged to contact 1-888-886-3998, from 8:30 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. daily. The names of those who have specialized skills matching actual requirements will be forwarded to the federal government once actual needs are identified.
