Call for Proposals : Managing Aggressive Behaviours in Seniors in Various States of Care

The Ministry of Health and Long Term Care (MOHLTC) invites proposals from researchers and health educators in Ontario for one or both programs on managing aggressive behaviours in seniors in various stages of care:

#1 Physicians Training: design and pilot a "PIECES"1 based Educational Program tailored to family physicians and physicians in LTC homes

and/or

#2 Community of Practice: Coordinate a Community of Practice on managing aggressive behaviours in seniors for caregivers, researchers and policy makers who have an interest in this area.

    Notice of Decisions:  February 2006
    Quarterly reports:  July 15, 2006; October 15, 2006; January 15, 2007
    Final report:  March 31, 2007
    Project completed:  March 31, 2007

  3. Funds Available: up to $190,500
    • The total amount allocated to fund both initiatives for (1) year is up to $190,500.
  4. Background and Context
    • Seniors’ Health Research Transfer Network (SHRTN) is funded by MOHLTC to improve the quality of life for seniors in long-term care homes and in the community by making research more applicable, accessible and relevant.
    • SHRTN connects caregivers, researchers and policy-makers to ensure that all work responsively to improve seniors’ care and increase ability to bring evidence to care.
    • Four partner organizations have been funded to date, with other champions in knowledge exchange also working towards integration with the established structures and tools.
  5. Eligibility:
    • All proponents for both programs must be Ontario-based working in an area of research and/or practice focused on managing behavioural challenges in seniors in various stages of care and must demonstrate their ability to meet the attached Review Criteria for the program they are applying for.
    • Proponents will be required to collaborate with SHRTN.
  6. How to Apply:
    • Please send submissions for one or both of these programs to spu@moh.gov.on.ca by January 20, 2006. Inquiries can also be directed to the same place.
  7. Review Process:
    • The transparent merit review process will include an equal number of decision-makers and researchers using the Criteria described for each initiative.
  8. Reviewers outside Ontario:
    • Interested in being a member of the review panel, please indicate your interest to spu@moh.gov.on.ca by December 31, 2005. Reviews will take place the end of January with decisions made by teleconference in February 2006.
Details:
  1. Physician Training
  2. A "PIECES" – based Educational Program for Physicians will be customized to the needs of this audience and will be based on the successful delivery of prior PIECES training designed for other audiences. (See www.piecescanada.com)

    Deliverables:

    Short educational program based on PIECES in appropriate format(s), including:

    1. Development of an overall strategy for physician education on aggressive behaviours
    2. Developing content customized for physicians in primary and community or long term care homes based on existing PIECES training
    3. Pilot the program with a number of physicians by summer 2006
    4. Evaluate, revise and produce final program with supporting materials
    5. Investigate the accreditation of the module as a Continuing Medical Education Unit

    Selection Criteria:

    The proponent(s) will be evaluated on:

    • Strength and suitability of the proponent demonstrated by:
      i. knowledge of aggressive behaviours in seniors
      ii. experience in designing continuing medical education
      iii. familiarity with the PIECES approach

    Your application should include:

    A. A proposal of no more than five (5) pages clearly outlining:

    1. Your team (all those involved in the proposal) and a single lead contact
    2. An outline of the proposed approach for the PIECES Education Program for Physicians that includes:
      1. set-up; methods
      2. formats (workshop, web-based, etc.)
      3. outcomes; a description of how proposed activities will achieve desired objectives
      4. anticipated challenges
      5. deliverables
      6. total projected cost

    B. Three references

  3. Community of Practice:
  4. Coordinating a Community of Practice (CoP) on Managing Aggressive Behaviours

    Deliverables:

    Full Time Equivalent (FTE) knowledge broker to:

    1. Support users in navigating and making best use of already established SHRTN collaborative technology
    2. Establish taxonomy and register CoP users through SHRTN
    3. Work within existing SHRTN governance structures and according to conditions of MOHLTC grants
    4. Set up initial collaborative web environment by May 1, 2006
    5. Organize at least one face to face workshop with a province-wide reach, and ongoing regular networking events (could be web-cast)
    6. Support exchange and integration with other elements of SHRTN by representing the interests of the CoP at communications, evaluation and other SHRTN tables as a member of the Steering Committee
    7. Recruit participants by publicizing the CoP and motivating contributions of time and knowledge products until March, 2007

    Selection Criteria:

    The proponent will have:

    1. Demonstrated experience helping others to use technology and establishing web environments
    2. Demonstrated experience facilitating dialogue and exchange of knowledge in a variety of channels
    3. Health sciences background (degree an asset)
    4. Demonstrated understanding of communities of practice and team learning

    A. A proposal of no more than five (5) pages clearly outlining:

    1. Contact details;
    2. Your strengths and suitability demonstrated by:
      • Experience in interactive web site management
      • knowledge of managing aggressive behaviours in seniors
      • experience in facilitating learning/ relationship building in a web-based environment
    3. An outline of the proposed approach for the CoP that includes:
      • set-up; methods of sustaining participation
      • formats (web-based, face-to-face meetings, etc..)
      • outcomes; a description of how proposed activities will achieve desired objectives;
      • anticipated challenges
      • deliverables
      • Total projected costs
