Ontario Health Quality Council

The Ontario Health Quality Council has released its first report on the status of Ontario’s health care system.

The inaugural review focuses on areas including access to health care services, information management, innovation and research, as well as health services delivery integration. The report also discusses the current state of the health system and population health.

The Ontario Health Quality Council is an independent body funded by the Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care. The mandate of the council is to monitor and report to Ontarians on access to publicly funded health services and related health human resources, consumer population health status and health system outcomes. The council will support continuous quality improvement.

The council’s report is deigned to :

  • Encourage and promote an integrated, consumer-centered health system
  • Track performance of the health care system
  • Help Ontarians to better understand and benefit from the health system by making it more transparent and accountable.

The Minister of Health and Long-Term Care has shared the council’s report with the legislature and the public. The report is available online.

The council will report annually to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care. Council members will have an opportunity to contribute to an arm’s length agency responsible for reporting on the government’s progress in delivering results based on its health priorities. They will be contributing to a more accountable, integrated health system where results matter and are communicated to Ontarians.

Membership on the council

Membership criteria includes :

  • Experts in the health system in the areas of patient and consumer issues and health service provision;
  • Experts in the areas of governance, accountability and public finance;
  • Persons from the community with a demonstrated interest or experience in health services.

Final appointments to the Ontario Health Quality Council are made by the Lieutenant Governor in Council. An arms'-length expert advisory panel made recommendations regarding potential candidates to the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care for his consideration. The Minister announced the launch of the Ontario Health Quality Council on September 12, 2005.

Council members will receive per diem compensation for attending Council meetings and for undertaking other related work as well as travel and accommodation expenses as required. They will be expected to serve for two or three years, depending on term of appointment.
