Important Information for Registered Nurses in the Extended Class

The RN(EC) drug list was updated on September 11, 2004 via an amendment to regulation 275/94 under the Nursing Act. Registered Nurses (Extended Class) may prescribe any drug on the list, subject to the circumstances outlined in the regulations.

These new drugs have not yet been added to Part XI of the Ontario Drug Benefit (ODB) Formulary, which lists those products on the RN(EC) prescribing list that are ODB eligible drug products. Updating the formulary requires a separate amendment to regulations under the Ontario Drug Benefit Act. Until the formulary is updated, ODB eligible patients will not be covered for the cost of these new drugs prescribed by RN(EC)s.

This update is on schedule for the next ODB formulary update, expected to be complete in early 2005. Updates are posted in the Ontario Drug Benefit Formulary / Comparative Drug Index section of this website.
