Ontario Advisory Committee on HIV/AIDS (OACHA) Strategy

Skip column two

OACHA has developed an HIV/AIDS strategy for Ontario titled Ontario’s Strategy to Address HIV/AIDS to 2008. The strategy was developed in consultation with a broad range of HIV/AIDS stakeholders.

The goals of the strategy are to :

  • prevent the spread of HIV, and
  • improve the health and well-being of people living with HIV and their communities.

The policy directions advanced by the strategy are to :

  • adopt a determinants of health approach and address social justice issues (visit the Health Canada website
  • focus on long-term, integrated, sustainable, targeted responses
  • develop a flexible provincial response to HIV that takes into account local and population needs
  • improve Ontario's capacity to respond effectively through improved monitoring and accountability.

The approach focuses on five main areas :

  1. Knowledge. It is important to develop, disseminate and apply knowledge about all aspects of the epidemic.
  2. Leadership/integration. Leadership is essential for an itegrated approach to the epidemic.
  3. Services. Equal access to services across Ontario must be ensured.
  4. Resources. Adequate resources for HIV/AIDS must be ensured.
  5. Accountability. There must be accountability for the quality of services and the use of resources.
