The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care’s Emergency Management Unit (EMU) would like to invite community emergency response personnel from across Ontario to participate in training sessions for the NESS Emergency Hospital. The course is designed to promote awareness of the NESS program and to familiarize participants with the contents of the Emergency Hospital including general logistics considerations for setup should it become necessary to deploy this equipment within your community.

The NESS is a federal program of the Public Health Agency of Canada, and is managed within Ontario by the MOHLTC. The various components of this program are designed to support communities in the event that local resources are overwhelmed or compromised by an emergency. The 200-bed Emergency Hospital component of the NESS offers basic emergency medical supplies and equipment and can also support basic social services needs. The unit must be deployed within an existing indoor facility in the affected community. In order to broaden awareness and ensure the viability of this resource within your community, the Emergency Management Unit is offering several training opportunities, and hopes to have your cooperation and support!

Who can participate?

• Participants should be designated by the Community Emergency Management Coordinator (CEMC) as individuals who would be responsible for setting up this equipment within the community or selected components should it be deployed in the event of an emergency
• Participants do not require medical or health-care experience. The course is focused on the logistics of deployment and setup within a community.
• The training involves the set-up of equipment; participants should be prepared for manual labour and some heavy lifting.
• Participants would have the ability to guide additional personnel within the community to assist in the setup and may also have the opportunity to provide assistance at a future NESS course.

• Wednesday November 12th to Thursday November 13th, 2008

• Meals and accommodation are provided through the College. Participants are responsible for their own travel arrangements. Accommodations are dorm style. Participants may make alternative arrangements at their own expense.
