Baby Boomers should get Tested for Hepatitis C
Text version [RTF]

The Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care wants baby boomers who experimented with injection drugs, and anyone who has ever taken street drugs, injected steroids or were tattooed prior to 1990 to speak to their doctor about getting tested for hepatitis C (HCV).

"People may have tried injection drugs even only once, 20 to 30 years ago and may now be experiencing some symptoms of HCV, however, they may not associate their past drug use with this disease," said Dr. Morris Sherman, Hepatologist at the University Health Network.

Those who have ever used street drugs or injected steroids, particularly when shared, should get tested.

Between 105,000 to 132,000 people in Ontario are infected with HCV, but between 30,000 and 57,000 are not aware because they haven’t been tested.
