The Ministry of Health and Long-Term has launched an Ontario-wide public education campaign in an effort to encourage the estimated 32,000 to 57,000 Ontarians who are unaware they are infected with the hepatitis C virus (HCV) to get tested. "If you received a tattoo prior to the 1990s or ever experimented with injection drugs, even if it was decades ago, you should ask your health care provider to get tested," said Dr. Morris Sherman, Hepatologist at the University Health Network. "You’re the person we’re reaching out to because you likely have no symptoms and have no idea you may have put yourself at risk." The campaign is targeting street and injection steroid drug users and baby boomers who have been tattooed or ever experimented with injection drugs. A series of outdoor and newspaper ads will appear between March and April, urging people at risk to get tested. |
