Relief for allergies in sight

Sneezing, a runny nose, congestion and itchy, watery eyes are all common symptoms of allergies that can make you detest the spring and summer months. Allergic rhinitis, meaning "allergic nose disease", can either be a seasonal or year-round condition. If it's seasonal, it's often commonly referred to as hay fever and can be triggered by things like trees, grass, weed pollens (like ragweed) and even smog. But, it's not only seasonal allergies that can be a problem. Dust mites, pets and moulds, for instance, that linger throughout the year can trigger symptoms as well.

The tendency to be allergic can be inherited, but developing particular allergies to cat dander, for example, cannot. When you have allergies, it's in a sense our body's way of overreacting to certain types of substances by releasing histamine, a chemical often found in cells. However, when it's released in the nasal passages or airways, it narrows them, thus allowing less air to enter. It may often lead to muscle spasms that show up as sneezing or coughing.

Treating and preventing allergic reactions, is simple – avoid the allergens altogether. Simple things you can do to help minimize seasonal symptoms include :

  • Avoid or limit being outdoors between 5 a.m. and 10 a.m. when pollen counts are high (refer to weather reports and also stay indoors on windy days when pollen can get blown around).
  • Shower and change your clothing after you've been outdoors for extended periods and remove shoes before coming in to avoid further contact with pollen.
  • Close all windows to avoid pollens making their way into your home and turn on your air conditioning instead.
  • Air-drying your laundry outside can trap pollen and mould, so hang clothes inside or use a dryer.

Allergens often exist in your home and can be eliminated by doing the following :

  • Vacuum frequently or remove carpets or curtains for example that can collect dust.
  • Place a plastic cover on your mattress, wash bedding weekly in hot water and replace down bedding with synthetic fibres.
  • Keep humidity below 50 per cent.
  • Clean or remove all mildewed items.
  • Avoid contact with pets and wash your hands and clothes after all contact.

If taking the above measures doesn't work for you, antihistamines, allergy shots, otherwise also known as allergen immunotheraphy or Vitamin C may also help relieve symptoms. Talk to your health care provider to find out what would work best for you.
